[NOTE ADDED: Some or most or all of the towers in Tallinn's surviving mediaeval Hanseatic defences have names. "Pikk Hermann", in English "Tall Hermann", is the traditional emblem of Estonian aspirations to continuity in government. Pikk Hermann was present in pewter miniature, or perhaps even in sterling silver
miniature, on many a diaspora bookcase or sitting-room table during the
Cold War. It was usual to have on the family's miniature Pikk Hermann a
tiny cloth rendering of the national tricolour, as shown here both in the Stenbock House photo itself (flying from the vertical standard at the gable) and as realized, through due photographic composition, in a winter woodland scene (at the lower left-hand corner of my screenshot). Diaspora families remembered how the tricolour got suppressed in the Soviet and Nazi occupations - flying, however, briefly from Tall Hermann in the chaos of 1944 September, when the Republic came momentarily under the administration of Prime Minister Otto Tief, as appointed by the then acting President, Prof. Jüri Uluots. 1919.a. lipukavand on ilmselt põhjamaine, tarvitades küll 1881.a. valitud rahvusvärve, kuid selle sama risti kujundusega, mida me praegu leiame Islandi-Taani-Norra-Rootsi-Soome riigilippudelt. Kas rahva praegused sihid - rahva püüdlused, tema kultuurilised-poliitilised aated - on küllaldaselt kajastatud olemasolevas kolmetriibulises trikolooris? Või kas eestlaste oletatav Põhjamaine olemus nõuaks nüüd pigem 1919.a. lipu kasutuselevõtmist (või selle kavandi mõne lähedase, tavaks kujunenud Põhjamaade ristiga varustatud, variandi)? - The 1919 proposal is clearly Nordic in spirit, using indeed the national colours selected back in 1881, but displaying that same Nordic cross which we nowadays find on the flags of Iceland, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and Finland. Or does the putative Nordicity of Estonians now require, instead, the flag proposed in 1919 (or some close variant thereon, with the cross that has as a matter of established convention come to characterise Nordic states)?
